Dear Friends and Colleagues, March 2008
Coast to Coast Bike Ride – Biarritz to Barcelona!
The challenge is to raise enough money to build a school in the Gambia. The target is £14,000!
I will be leaving the UK on 2 April to ride from Biarritz on the Atlantic coast of France to Barcelona on the Mediterranean coast of Spain; some 630kms, including crossing the Pyrenees. As previously, I will be carrying all my own kit and there will be no support vehicle. My friend and cycling colleague, Peter Vince will be riding with me and he is fundraising for a hospice charity close to his home in Sussex.
Schools for Gambia, see www.schoolsforgambia.org.uk is a small charity, committed to helping children in the Gambia to gain a basic education. Please look at their website to see the incredibly valuable work that they do to support children and families who live in very basic and poor conditions. Please note also that all money raised goes to projects, with no deductions for administration costs.
My fundraising is directed towards raising enough money to build a school block on an existing site on the south side of Farafenni town. This is in the Baddibu District in the North Bank Division; a very poor area. The school block would consist of three full size classrooms, an offi ce and storerooms. This will be what is known as a Lower Basic School and, when completed, would be handed over to the Government to run and to employ the required teachers. Local children will then be able to transfer from the Primary School when they are seven years old. Currently, the nearest Lower Basic School is a considerable distance away; too far for the children to walk and consequently there is a high risk of them dropping out of education altogether after the Primary stage.
I really would appreciate your help with this. Please sponsor me for the completed journey. I will do it whatever the conditions. Donations or pledges would be very much appreciated. Cheques, made out to ‘Schools for Gambia’, can be sent to me at Plas Eliseg, Llantysilio, Llangollen LL20 8DE. Alternatively, donate on line at www.mycharitypage.com/nigelpetrie.
Donations on line attract Gift Aid for UK taxpayers which is a valuable advantage for the charity.
Thank you for all the support you have given in the past and please give generously on this occasion; it will be worth it to help those less fortunate than ourselves.
With very best wishes,
