VITAL AT THE HOUSE OF LORDS VITAL AT THE HOUSE OF LORDS Black Tie Dinner at the House of Lords on 17th December, 2009. The Baroness Miller of Hendon, MBE, and Patron of VITAL, is kindly hosting this occasion which includes a tour of both houses. The event will be held in the historic Cholmondeley Room, which has a wonderful riverside terrace overlooking Big Ben and the London Eye on the Thames. The Guest of Honour is Dame Norma Major, DBE, the wife of Sir John Major, the former British Prime Minister. The dinner will be used to launch an appeal in aid of VITAL’s work to help prevent children in red light areas in West Bengal from being drawn into the sex industry, along with education and protection of children living on the streets and in the slums. Children of women in prostitution are both severely stigmatised and socially excluded. Most worryingly, they are at high risk of becoming second generation sex workers, or being drawn into the associated activities of drug peddling, buying and selling of alcohol, and pimping. By providing these children and those living on the streets and slums with education, protection, basic health services and opportunities to develop leadership and other skills, VITAL will not only protect the children from exploitation but break the cycle of poverty. The beauty of this charity is it creates the opportunity for many others all over the world to translate that desire “to do something” into the action of actually doing something. The underlying ethos of VITAL is the belief that we, as individuals greatly enrich our lives by giving back to the community less fortunate than ours, a community we live in and draw from so abundantly. So come on, let's help these little children all around the world, starting with the children from Kolkata - the “City of Joy".
