Every year natural disasters leave people in need of medical help at a time when the services on which they once relied are destroyed; wars claim the lives of innocent people and leave refugees susceptible to malnutrition and sickness; and in many of the world’s poorest countries, diseases like malaria, tuberculosis and HIV threaten entire communities in regions where health centres or hospitals are poorly developed or non-existent.
Merlin specialises in health, saving lives in times of crisis and helping to rebuild shattered health systems. Every year Merlin’s international teams directly help more than 5.5 million vulnerable people affected by natural disasters, conflict, disease outbreaks and health system collapse in countries throughout Africa, Asia and the Middle East. We need your support to enable our trained medical, health and logistics teams to operate in situations that are demanding and often dangerous.
Support Merlin and you will save lives. You will help to ensure that we can be there for those in desperate need in times of crisis. And that’s not all you’ll be doing, because Merlin is also committed to looking beyond emergencies to safeguard long-term health.
Your support will ensure we are able to act quickly and effectively whenever and wherever people need us.
As you read, Merlin’s teams are in action combating four key threats:
Natural disasters: More than 250 million people are affected each year by earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, hurricanes and floods.
Conflict: In Africa 8 million people were killed, injured or displaced in armed conflicts across 14 countries in the first 5 years of the 21st century.
Disease: Easily curable diseases such as measles, malaria and TB claim 3.5 million lives a year,
Health system collapse: This can happen suddenly, or may result from decline caused by political change, such as in Zimbabwe.
