 Kids for Kids
KIDS FOR KIDS supports long-term, self-sustainable projects, identified and run by the communities themselves – aimed at specifically helping children. An integrated approach, blending a range of complementary initiatives reinforces the impact of each project and maximises benefits to lift an entire village. The aim is to empower people to take control of their own future, focusing in particular on the poorest, usually women-headed families, who are struggling to care for their children in what are possibly the harshest conditions in the world.
Projects include the simple loans of goats to provide much-needed nutrition for malnourished children, and income through the milk and kids, enabling families to begin to pay for schooling and other items formerly beyond their reach, and to build up reserves for emergencies such as medicine at times of illness. Countless animals have been looted or have died during the conflict. KIDS FOR KIDS provides donkeys - essential transport for water, wood for fuel and fodder and donkey ploughs and carts to improve cultivation. Paravets and the establishment of a revolving fund for veterinary drugs enable communities, which have no other veterinary care, to improve the health of all their livestock. Healthy animals lead to healthy children. Water is a high priority for humans and animals alike. KIDS FOR KIDS’ hand-pumps have enabled thousands of children to attend school for the first time; by reducing the time spent collecting water. At the request of communities, KIDS FOR KIDS also trains village midwives and primary health care workers and seeks to provide basic medical equipment for rural hospitals. Agriculture is a priority, including improved water harvesting and irrigation techniques, improved seeds and an extensive programme for planting trees to stabilise the environment and provide fruit, shade and a cash crop. So far we have planted 460,000 trees, many as green belts around villages.
