Healing Hands Network was set up specifically to send volunteer care professionals to work with people suffering from the trauma and terrible consequences of war or disaster.
Healing Hands Network pioneered its work in Sarajevo, Bosnia. Although Sarajevo is no longer much featured in the media, our work is still needed. The ravages of rape, torture, the disappearance of loved ones and extensive landmines have taken a huge toll. Rebuilding is under way but the physiological and psychological scars take longer to heal.
We have been sending two therapists a week from April to October since 1997, and have now carried out over 20,000 treatments. Teams of Healing Hands volunteers are currently working to bring hands-on relief. They are fully qualified and experienced volunteer practitioners. Therapies include massage, reflexology, aromatherapy, acupuncture and reiki.
Five years ago little was known about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Today it is a recognised condition and our work in relieving its symptoms is both welcomed and valued.
Equally important is the development of Healing Hands Network's work in other areas. The people of Bosnia are gradually rebuilding their lives but disturbances in neighbouring countries and other parts of the world are creating an even greater need for the help we can offer.
Some quotes from our members:
These people hold their grief and anguish with so much courage. It seems that many have stomach problems from years of fear and food deprivation. I learnt so much from the two weeks I was there.
I am so pleased and happy that I was able to go back to Sarajevo, not least because I was able to see the results on the clients. So many of them looked so much better and it is great to know that we are working to such good effect.
The work was tremendously rewarding. I learnt so much from the clients and remain humble in the light of their personal courage and endurance.
