my event
As part of my ‘Golden Philosophy’, I will be raising funds for the East Anglian Air Ambulance by helping to renovate the A. Gariseb Primary School which serves the Anixab Community who live along the Ugab river bed in a remote part of Namibia.
Why the name “Golden Philosophy”?
This phrase characterizes one of the beliefs that I have developed as a result of facing several difficult personal experiences during my life. When a serious or challenging situation arises, having access to the best help, at the right time, from the right people, is paramount. In emergency medicine, rapid intervention in the ‘golden hour’ after the occurrence of multi- system trauma, can determine the difference between life and death. A fully operational air ambulance ensures the possibility that victims can be treated in that time.
Why this particular challenge?
I watched my dad die in front of me when I was in my early teens, simply because expert medical intervention did not take place in time. Furthermore, having been hampered by a chronic health condition for the past 8 years, I have been fortunate in benefiting from treatment which now gives me greater control of my symptoms. This event allows me to celebrate the new lease of life that I have been given, in a positive way, for the benefit of others, and in doing so re-ignites in me the true essence of life.
Undertaking the Namibian Project challenge allows me to raise funds for the East Anglian Air Ambulance, which, contrary to belief, relies solely on public generosity via donations and fund-raising (it is NOT funded by the NHS, Government or National Lottery as many people think). It provides the skilled intervention to victims within the “golden hour” that can save lives. Being the second busiest in the country, the East Anglian Air Ambulance serves the counties of Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk. With a high proportion of incidents occurring in remote, rural areas, the Air Ambulance ensures swift, clinical care to patients with an average transit time to hospital of 13 minutes. Anyone living close to a hospital who doubts that they will ever require this service, just needs to consider the work journeys they and loved ones make, or days out they spend enjoying the countryside and attractions within East Anglia.
During the Namibian Project, I will be participating in the refurbishment of primary school buildings in a remote area of Namibia, which currently are in a serious state of disrepair. An improved learning environment will ensure that the youngsters attending the school are encouraged to acquire the knowledge, skills and understanding which will give them a brighter future and help them to become responsible adults. I am so excited about this challenge because it allows me to contribute beyond myself to benefit other people in two communities that are thousands of miles apart.
I am covering the costs of the trip independently, therefore 100% of all the money I raise through sponsorship or donations will be forwarded to the East Anglian Air Ambulance.[Reg Charity No:1083876].
