The centre was opened in 1989, funded by the London Docklands Development Corporation and the Sports Council at a cost of 1.2 million with the aim of providing recreational water activities for all sections of the community living and working in the local area.
It is owned by The Docklands Sailing & Watersports Centre Trust, a charitable trust with members drawn from boating enthusiasts and local organisations. It is managed by a wholly owned subsidiary company, The Docklands Sailing & Watersports Centre Limited. All directors and trustees are voluntary.
The Centre
The centre is based in an award winning purpose built facility at the west end of Millwall outer dock.
The ground floor is the 'wet' area providing full-changing facilities with showers, toilets and lockers.
The first floor, with its glass wall, has an excellent view of the dock so that you can see what's happening while relaxing in the bar with a drink or having a bite to eat. There is a balcony overlooking the dock, which provides the ideal place for BBQs on those long summer evenings.
The hall also overlooks the dock, making it ideal for; parties, meetings, seminars and functions for up to about 130 people seated. It is also used as a meeting place for local organisations and is available for hire for events such as weddings.
There is also a small room, which can be used for meetings of about 15 people and makes an ideal training room for courses.
The site provides ample parking, with extra capacity on the slipway opposite the front gates of the centre. This area can also be used for additional activities during events.
The Water
The Centre has the best of both worlds with direct access to the Millwall Dock and the river Thames.
The dock is 25 acres of sheltered water, providing a perfect environment for beginners to safely learn a new water sport. The water is frequently tested and conforms to the mandatory levels laid down by the E.C.
Across the road is a slipway, which provides the centre with direct access onto the river so we can extend the water based activities onto a more challenging and exciting stretch of water.
