Every child is born with a voice, and should be allowed and encouraged to use that voice. While the learning of instruments is to be encouraged, the voice is the one instrument we carry with us, and singing can start young children on the road to the love of music.

The main aim of The Voices Foundation, which was founded in 1993, is to transform the lives of children through singing. Its unique primary music education programme is a whole-school activity, involving all teachers and children, and all the musical concepts are taught through children’s singing games and songs which the teacher will have learned in advance of the lessons.

The programme is delivered by highly trained Advisory Teachers, who go into schools, work with the staff and pupils, and give teachers the confidence to teach music as they do other subjects. This addresses the concerns expressed by many Head Teachers about the shortage of music teaching skills; with ongoing emphasis on literacy and numeracy targets in state schools - and despite recent Government pledges to raise the profile of singing in schools - subjects like music and drama still tend to be sidelined.

Although The Voices Foundation receives no core funding, it strives to reach as many children as possible with the kind support of charitable trusts, and corporate and individual donations.
