Jeremy Charles, Chair of the charity Sense International, has challenged Vanessa, Bel, Christina, Ros, Ann-Marie, Anne and Kyle to take part in a gruelling trek along the Turkish coast from 8 – 12 October 2008 in order to raise valuable funds for the charity’s work.
Given that none of the team are experienced hikers, the challenge of tackling rugged paths, steep hills and deep forests cannot be overstated while fending off the interest of local shepherds and waiters… They will cover about 22km each day for three days and in addition to this however, they have set themselves the additional challenge of raising £1,300 each in sponsorship. Given that they will be covering all their own costs, every penny of this money will go direct to the charity.
Sense International supports children who are both deaf and blind in developing countries worldwide. In addition to the marginalising and isolating nature of the disability, a lack of resources and social welfare in developing countries means that families of deafblind children often struggle to escape the poverty trap. Children get neglected, institutionalised and abandoned and without support, four out of five die before their fifth birthday. Sense International gives deafblind children access to the crucial support they need. Through education, vocational training and advocacy services, Sense International transforms the lives of deafblind children from one of isolation and neglect to one of communication, interaction and self esteem.
We cannot imagine what it would be like to be deaf AND blind.
Anne has personally seen the impact of this work on the lives of deafblind children in Romania in 2007 when she visited a kindergarten supported by Sense International and saw children learning to communicate with their parents for the first time, learning necessary life living skills and getting an education. To her, the evidence was there as to how important a charity like Sense International is.
This is a unique charity: no other UK based charity tries to help these, the most disadvantaged people in the world.
Please show your support for Sense International and for the physical challenge that the girls of Thames River Capital have set themselves by donating at the bottom of this page. Any support you can give is hugely appreciated.
