Every year, almost 11 million children under five years of age die from causes that are largely preventable and diseases that are easily curable including measles, diarrhoea and malaria. Professional health workers have the necessary expertise to turn this situation around, if they could only reach them. However, isolation through lack of transport, large distances and harsh terrains means these people continue to die. Riders for Health is dedicated to overcoming this gap in the health care delivery system and to ensuring that help finally reaches those suffering.
Riders for Health has over 20 years’ experience working in Africa. We have created an appropriate infrastructure, run entirely by local men and women, in which vehicles can be managed so that they work reliably, despite the harsh conditions. Riders currently manages over 1,300 vehicles, in seven African countries, and keeps over one thousand health workers from a variety of organisations ‘on the road’, from ministries of health to small community organisations. The result is that over 10.8 million people are now receiving regular health care.
