 Planting Promise
Planting Promise is an organization dedicated to the development of education in Sierra Leone. Our aim is to do this by bringing to the world's poorest country opportunities to initiate self-run, self-supporting projects that offer real solutions to the difficulties facing the country. We believe real and lasting development comes from below, from local projects that address specific needs, rather than large international models. To this end, we currently run seven farms, and a food-processing factory where we manufacture a unique and nutritious version of a local staple called 'Welbodi Gari'. The profits from our businesses are then used to support free education for children and adults in our seven schools. In order to maintain and improve the quality of the education provided by our schools, we are closely linked to two schools in the UK - The Hall School, Hampstead and the Eleanor Palmer School, Camden. Teachers from both schools have travelled out to Sierra Leone to both teach, and run teacher training courses.

Through the combination of business with social progress, we hope that we are providing real, lasting and profound changes for the better by promoting sustainable and beneficial industry in the country, and putting it to the service to the needs of the people. As well as providing the income to fund the school, the farms will also be an example of successful commercial enterprise to teach the children in the school the viability of profit-making schemes that go beyond subsistence models, the only things the children of these desperately poor areas are accustomed to. By learning particular details of the challenges that they will face, the children will, we hope, emerge from this school equipped to contribute in a real way to their society so much need of help, and so fantastically endowed with the materials to help itself.

We are an international organisation because we recognise the benefit an outsider's perspective can have in seeing beyond short-term difficulties. We deliver vision. Yet we are also keen to keep our perspective very suited to the precise circumstances in which we find ourselves, to keep our projects relevant and applicable to the benefit of our staff and members. To reflect this dual objective, the management of Planting Promise is divided between Sierra Leone and the United Kingdom, with the constitution providing two counterpart committees that are mutually dependent.
