My Charity Page my event
My challenge started on 24 April 2010 from Harwich, England. It is to cycle 3,600 miles around 7 countries on the North Sea in 70 days (England, Scotland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Netherlands). The finish will be at Harwich hopefully on 3 July 2010.

MY CHALLENGE IS COMPLETE (WELL ALMOST)

My challenge has two parts. For me, it was to cycle the whole of the North Sea Cycle Route in one journey. I was to carry all my own clothing and not to be supported by others in any way. It is the Guinness Book Of Records as the longest cycle route in the World and only 55 people have done it in one go up to the end of 2009. I am also 64 and want to prove that age is no barrier to adventure.

For the Wildlife Trust, I want to raise awareness and importance of wildlife. By choosing such an epic route, it was proposed that I complete it in 70 days and raise £10,000.

I have an illustrated website where you can follow my journey and see my story. It is http://www.cycle770.blogspot.com. There is an easy link at the blog at the end of this website.

WHAT ARE MY RESULTS SO FAR?

Yippee: I have done the journey.

Yippee: It took 72 days. OK - This is 2 days longer but I was delayed for 2 days by 2 ferries.

Yippee: I found that the North Sea Coastline is spectacular. It is magical. The scenery is breathetaking, most towns and villages are delightful, the wildlife is spectacular and despite this, it absorbs working towns where trade occurs and holidaymakers visit.

Sad: I have not reached my financial target. I must get my hankerchief out at this point. I must tell you that if everyone who visited this website donated £10, then the total would be approaching £50,000. Please do not give up now and read on.

WHY GIVE MONEY FOR WILDLIFE? A PERSONAL VIEW.

I believe a healthy body and mind are so important in life. Cycling requires a healthy diet and plenty of exercise. So junk food is out and good food is in.

We live in a heavily populated country. I have lived in the countryside for most of my working life. I see that food production and wildlife must be in harmony. There is no such thing as a free lunch. I believe absolutely that we need wildlife and rely on it. Moreover the experts are convinced on global warming and carbon emissions. Did you watch Chris Packham on BBC while I was away? The countryside properly cared for by us will respond by caring for us. I am utterly convinced of this. I only needed to cycle the 100s miles of North Sea dykes to see for myself the awesome brilliance of nature in the Wadden Sea sitting comfortably beside fish farmers, land farmers and wind turbines.

Wildlife in our modern society is not free and it must be paid for. I believe Devon Wildlife Trust do a brilliant job caring for nature. So, please donate to them and remember by implication you are supporting wildlife everywhere with my appeal.

WHAT NEXT?

Will there be another challenge?
